PanelCheck Pattern Guide

Visual inspection on your TV

PanelCheck shows full-screen test patterns for inspecting near-black and near-white detail, grayscale, gradients, color, screen uniformity, and motion. It is a visual inspection utility, not a calibration instrument.

Use Left/Right to change tests, Up/Down to adjust supported tests, and Center/Select/OK to open or close Test Info. On first launch, Center/Select/OK dismisses the welcome panel. The selected test and settings are saved locally.

Free tests

Black: A black field for observing lighter areas, glow, or unevenness. Room reflections can affect what is visible.

Grayscale Steps: 21 gray bands from 0% to 100% sRGB in 5% steps. Compare neighboring steps for merging, uneven transitions, or unexpected tint.

Color: Full-screen red, green, and blue fields. Use Up/Down to select the color and look for spots, bands, or uneven color.

Motion: A white bar moves across a black background. Use Up/Down to change speed and direction. Observe blur, trails, colored edges, multiple images, or uneven motion.

Tests included in the optional unlock

Near Black: Five 1–5% sRGB patches against black. Compare which patches you can distinguish from the background.

Gradient: A grayscale ramp. Use Up/Down to reverse the ramp and observe bands, abrupt changes, or unexpected color.

Near White: Five 95–99% sRGB patches against white. Compare subtle light levels; no above-white source values are generated.

Uniformity: Full-screen gray fields at 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% sRGB. Use Up/Down to change levels and look for spots, bands, tint, or brighter and darker areas.

Moving Uniformity: A moving reference ball on a gray background. Observe uneven areas that stay fixed on the screen.

Unlock All Tests is a permanent, one-time in-app purchase with no subscription. The app displays the localized price supplied by the store.

How to interpret the patterns

Percentages describe nonlinear encoded sRGB source components. They are not percentages of measured luminance or verified HDMI signal codes. Device output processing, TV settings, room lighting, and the rest of the display chain can change the result.

PanelCheck does not measure color accuracy, luminance, gamma, input lag, or response time. It does not automatically calibrate your TV, change its picture settings, diagnose defects, or repair pixels or burn-in. Visual observations do not establish reference-generator accuracy, HDR or Dolby Vision calibration accuracy, or identical output between platforms.

Installation and help

Apple TV requires tvOS 17 or later. The Android TV / Google TV build requires Android 7.0 (API 24) or later on a compatible TV device. Check store listings for device compatibility and regional availability; the Amazon listing provides current availability for the Fire TV build. Roku is in development and has no public installation link here.
